Edith Burhans 1913-2002
On November 12th of last year Edith H Burhans passed away at the Lakeview Continuing Care Center in Lawton. She was born on Beaver Island on June 23, 1913, the daughter of James H and Katherine (Allers) Gallagher. She graduated from high school in St. James in 1931, and was the Salutatorian. She was crowned Miss Beaver Island that summer.
In 1938 she married Robert Burhans, who preceded her in death in 1993. She was also preceded in death by sisters Margaret McCann, Dorothy McCann, and Mae Coppens, brothers James, Norbert, Leo, Billy, and Rt. Re. Msgr. Victor Gallagher. A member of St. Mary's Church in Paw Paw since 1965, she leaves children Robert Burhans Jr. of Kalamazoo, Joan Pipes, Karen Pennington, and Martha (Lewis) Turner of Lawton, Jon (Catherine) Burhans of Portage, Victor (Karen) Burhans of Morrison, and son-in-law James Pipes Sr. of Lansing, 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, brother Earl (Mary) Gallagher of Traverse City, sister-in-law Delores Gallagher of Riverdale IL, brother-in-law Jack Coppens of Charlevoix, many nieces, nephews, and friends. All who knew Edith remember her for her great beauty, her kind and loving nature, and her deep faith.
She kept in touch with several Island families, and has relatives here. She visited as often as she could, including for a week last summer.
