Melvin snags Record Pike
Long-time Island fisherman Melvin Napont recently broke his own record by catching a 20#, 37 inch northern pike on tip-ups off Buddy Martin's dock. Getting it on the line was the easiest part, he told the crowd of reporters who witnessed his catch. Getting it out of the lakethat was the problem. The dang thing kept twisting sideways on me as I pulled it towards the hole. So I took my saw and cut the hole in the ice a little bigger, and tried again. I went through three blades before finally getting the dang thing out, and then it tried to bite my toe! He was glad he fought it to the end, though, because it sure tasted good.
