On a beautiful, warm evening the Northport Band, under the direction
of Doug Scripps, joined the Beaver Island Community Choir, plus
Rich and Mike Scripps, for a free, mosquitoless Concert on the
Green in early July. Still in a martial mood from the 4th of July,
one stirring march followed another. Lyrics to four patriotic
songs were passed around the hundred and ten people basking on
the lawn, many of whom then joined in. The high point was Cindy
Cushman-Gillespie's rendition of Just a Closer walk with Thee,
with the choir supplying a haunting moving background chant.
