Challenger

|
One
of my favorite Christmas presents this year was getting a call
that the Southdown Challenger had spent the night tucked
in at Sand Bay and was still there on Christmas morning. So we
hopped in the car and then walked the bay from one point to the
other as the freighter swung around on her anchor with a magnificent
plume of steam to show us her best side. The photos are in the
February Beacon, on newsstands now.

How's
the Snow?
|
|
|
After
a mild beginning to winter and a warm reprieve in December, Beaver
Island finally got all the snow we had been asking for in January.
So the Island is now a winter wonderland for all those who enjoy
venturing out on snowmobiles, skis, and snowshoes to take in the
winter beauty and have a lot of fun at the same time. More winter

was the event that Island singers and musicians have been practicing
for all fall, and all that practicing certainly did pay off! The

Closing Party
|
|
CMU's
annual Beaver Island closing party has become one of the Island's
hallmark fall traditions. It's always fun to see the CMU students
come out in amazing costumes while enjoying the live music. Click

of Beaver

|
The
Second Annual Bite of Beaver Island organized by Deborah
Harwood and the Chamber of Commerce was even better than last
year with table after table of delicious offerings and a great
turn out. We have lots of photos from the event in the November
Beacon!

Island Boodle
|
|
|
The
First Annual Beaver Island Boodle which Gail and Mike Weede
organized as part of the Chamber's October 4th Bite of Beaver
Island festival was a huge success with 68 people entering
this first-time Island event! More pictures in the November Beacon!

August
7th was truly a lucky day. As I walked up to the Gillespie
dock to take a few photographs of a beautiful schooner
tied up there, I learned they were just about to take
an afternoon sail and had room for one more. So with
camera in hand, I jumped aboard... (story appears in

Deer
|
|
Jeff
Powers sent us this picture of two deer enjoying the fall
colors. We had already printed our color pages for November
when we received it, but I thought our web site visitors

Walleye
|
|
As
a late-breaking addition to the story which appears in
the August Beaver Beacon, even though the first
netting from the new walleye pond was disappointing, several
volunteers from the Wildlife Club returned to rescue seven
additional and very large young
walleyes.

Amistad
|
|
On
July 13th a crowd gathered at the Boat Dock to watch the
Schooner Amistad tie up and spend the night. On
the 14th an equally large crowd gathered at Whiskey Point
to watch her depart with sails up. A perfect start for
Museum
Week!

New
Bike Path
|
|
|
The
new Bicycle Path next to the Donegal Bay road is now officially
open. On the 4th, everyone met at 11:30 to walk and ride
down the trail to the north shore.

The
4th of July
|
|
We
waited until the evening of the 4th to print the final
pages of the July Beaver Beacon so we could get
pictures of all the 4th of July festivities: the Parade,
the cannon, the horses, the tap dancers... and lots
more.

AmVets
Raise Flags
|
|
|
On
April 9th the AmVets moved their patriotic display team
to Whiskey Point and began decorating the Light. Story
in the May Beaver Beacon.

School Play
|
|
The
Vile
Veterinarian, a 5th and 6th Grade Play featured
in the May and June Beaver Beacon
|
|

|
St.
Patrick's Day
|
|
| On
March 15th, at the onset of the year's first heat wave,
Beaver Island turned Irish. One man visiting from downstate
who kept coming out of the Shamrock with a fresh drink was
heard to claim that he believed the obstacle race, tug of
war, and fish toss that took place on Main Street had been
held simultaneously, but it was not true. Story appears
in the April Beaver Beacon.

Twinning
|
|
Thirty
months after our cousins from Ireland came here, over 50
Beaver Islanders returned the favor by going there.

Grand
Rapids Party
|
|
|
At
one time parties in Chicago, Grand Rapids, and Lansing
allowed friends of Beaver Island to get together, but
these celebrations all faded away-until Grand Rapids came
up with the idea of featuring live Beaver Island music!

House
Parties
|
|
|
For
over 100 years this was the primary form of entertainment
on Beaver Island, get-togethers that included stories,
gossip, and live music-and now, thanks to Cindy Ricksgers
and the Youth Consortium, they're back!
